| VICTORIAN or CIVIL WAR ANKLE BOOTS Size 8N Victorian Ankle Boots that are in FANTASTIC shape - could be worn or put them on a shelf and decorate with them. Dark brown and made of very soft, pliable, what I call "kid" leather. Lined with a canvas type material. There are NO rips or tears to the leather. Just normal scuffing on toes and heels. Looks like they might have been resoled had taps put on heels. Where the soles attached on the inside of each boot, the edges are slightly loose - looks like they were glued when resoled. Again, this is very minimal, and it may be suppose to look this way, but want to notify buyer of anything that I see on these wonderful boots. Heels are wooden, 1 1/2" and entire boot height is 9 3/4" tall, including heels. These boots were probably considered "everyday" wear. 17 sets of holes for laces. There are no laces with the boots. There are a few places of blue on the leather. Not sure what this is, but it IS on the boots. Polish might cover this but it is not real obvious. Inside is very clean for the age of these boots. There is a heel pad that shows wear and isn't real clean. A gold name or brand is stamped on the top inside of each boot - but I cannot make it out. Max Cohen registered for the World War I draft in 1918, when his occupation was "Manufacturer Costumes, 105 Madison Ave.
N.Y.City." After the dissolution of his partnership with Charles J. Hirsch, Max stayed on at 105 Madison Ave. with his own business,
Max Cohen, Inc.
Material appears to be brown silk, fully lined with tan silk (?). There are flower appliques on the front and back in colors of orange,
green, red and tan. The appliques are embroidered and have quite a bit of damage to them.
1 1/2" brown lace is around the square neckline and the arm openings
Scalloped hemline
Under arm opening has 9 hook and eyes for closure with a snap at the top
I would consider the condition of this dress to be above average for it's age. The tan silk arm straps have shredded and some of
the stitching has come out where it attaches to the body of the dress. There are 2 holes in the outside brown material. One is
about even with the under arm opening and the other is on the opposite side/lower. The tan lining has a beautiful border - looks
almost to be brass - it is shiny and metallic. Hemline of the lining - under the border - has a sheer silk material approximately 1"
wide. The lining has some spots on it, including under arm stains.
It appears there was has been another layer between the brown and tan - of the sheer material. There are a few remnants of it at
the upper seams.
This dress is a larger size - measurements below, taken lying flat:
Under arms - 20" approximate waist - 22" approximate hips - 24" Length - total from straps to hem - 44" at it's longest
This dress is an awesome piece of history! A great piece for collectors or a museum
